At times when a massive high pressure system resides over Europe with no clouds concealing the view you could actually navigate the skies using a road atlas instead of following the electronic beams of the radio beacons. Like in the old “Luft Hansa” time when illuminated cities lead the way along the former airmail route from Berlin to Königsberg (Kaliningrad nowadays). In this painting, the constellation Ursa Major, “the great bear“ keeps watch over the city of Berlin whose city coat of arms includes a large depiction of a bear.
