They are formed when charged particles emitted from the sun strike atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, which then release photons, similar to what happens inside a neon tube. Anyone lucky enough to have experienced this undulating glow, might agree that people in the ancient world must have assumed they were witnessing a divine occurrence.
