Die kürzeste Verbindung auf der Erde ist der Großkreis und das bedeutet – wie es jeder gern mit einem Bindfaden auf dem Globus ausprobieren kann – dass der Anfangskurs zunächst einmal nach Norden weist. Der Weg von Frankfurt nach Vancouver oder Seattle führt also erst in Richtung Nordsee, vorbei an den ostfriesischen Inseln.
When heading to the West Coast of North America, the departure from Europe does not necessarily start off westbound. Due to the spherical shape of the Earth, the shortest way can be to initially head north. This concept can be tested out with a piece of string and a globe. The route from Frankfurt to Vancouver or Seattle takes you via the North Sea passing the East Frisian Islands on your left.
